The 'royal' in royal blue comes from England where this tone of blue was said to have been created for a competition to make a dress for Queen Charlotte (1744-1818).

So it has always had regal associations but it stands for trust, confidence and authority and as a colour works really well with ambers, tans, navy and pinks!
